Storyline

A Chinese envoy to the United Nations called for international cooperation and multilateralism to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday.

Speaking in the video conference of an open debate of the U.N. Security Council on pandemics and the challenges of sustaining peace, Zhang Jun, China's Permanent Representative to the U.N., said that the international community must be united and uphold multilateralism to prevail over the disease.

In the debate, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pointed out the importance and urgency of maintaining peace amid the pandemic which has brought unprecedented threats and challenges for peacekeeping operations.

"COVID-19 is a human tragedy, but we can mitigate the impacts by the choices we make," said Guterres.

Zhang noted that solidarity and cooperation are the most powerful weapon to defeat COVID-19 and conflict-affected countries are vulnerable spots in the global fight against the pandemic, so it’s a priority to help them cement the line of defense to secure a victory over COVID-19 and preserve the peacekeeping achievements.

Zhang called for greater awareness about sustainable peace and improvement of peacekeeping constructions.

He also advocated people-centered development to promote sustainable peace and strengthening political leadership and social participation.

"We should support the UN and the WHO in mobilizing countries to further strengthen policy coordination and increase resources to help with the preparation and response of the conflict-affected countries," Zhang said.

Zhang also warned against unilateralism in responses to COVID-19, branding it as "a one-way train heading to a dead end”, and stressed the need to uphold justice and the rule of law.

He called for respect for science and support for technological progress.

"Advances in science and technology are the common pursuit of humankind. Everyone is entitled to a better life. So are those in developing countries. The practice of putting up artificial barriers to hinder other countries' scientific and technological development, and to interfere with market competition for selfish gains is immoral, irresponsible, and against one's own interests," Zhang said.

Zhang noted that it is China's sincere hope that "U.N. members and the international community will act together, shoulder responsibilities together, share the benefits together, and jointly build a better future for all."
