The number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has surpassed 20 million as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the World Health Organization.

Globally, as of 17:05 CEST on Wednesday, a total of 20,162,474 confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been reported to WHO and the deaths caused by the disease had reached 737,417.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States reached 5,191,689 by 19:27 EST on Wednesday, an increase of 52,839 over the past 24 hours, according to statistics from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The national fatalities from the highly contagious virus reached 165,909, the CSSE tally shows.

In Australia, the coronavirus death toll has surpassed 350 on the nation's deadliest day of the pandemic.

Authorities on Wednesday confirmed 21 new deaths from COVID-19 in Australia, all of which were in Victoria, taking the national death toll to 352 and Victoria's to 267.

A statement from the Department of Health and Human Services in Victoria said on Wednesday that 16 of the 21 new deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 267 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

Melbourne has decided to extend its stay-at-home order through September 13.

Brazil on Wednesday said it registered 1,175 deaths from COVID-19 in the previous 24 hours, raising the death toll in the country to 104,201.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health's daily pandemic report, 55,155 new cases of infection were detected in tests in the same 24-hour period, taking the total caseload to 3,164,785.

A total of 2,309,477 patients have recovered.

Brazil has the world's second largest outbreak of COVID-19 after the United States.

The governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, announced on Wednesday that he tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the ministry, the hardest hit state is Sao Paulo, with 25,869 deaths and 655,181 cases of infection, followed by Rio de Janeiro with 14,295 deaths, and Ceara with 8,052 deaths.

New Zealand reported one new case of COVID-19 on Wednesday in managed isolation and quarantine facilities, with four more probable cases in the community related to Tuesday's four cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

The four probable cases are linked to the existing community transmission cases and are awaiting test results, according to the ministry.

There have been 1,225 confirmed cases to date, it said, adding there are currently 22 active cases, with five people having recovered over the past 24 hours.

Auckland resumed COVID-19 Alert Level 3 on Wednesday for three days, with the rest of the country going to Level 2, after 102 days without community transmission in the country.

Official data from the Spanish health department showed that the disease had infected 329,784 people and caused 28,579 deaths in the country as of Wednesday.

In Spain, nursing homes have recently reported more new COVID-19 cases, raising the concern of the Ministry of Health towards the epidemic control work in nursing homes.

Nearly 1,000 infection cases have been reported by nursing homes across the country.

Regional governments in Spain are trying to find more ways to prevent an epidemic rebound.

Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 42 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the lowest daily figure in more than four months.

Of the new cases, 11 are imported cases, one is community case and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers. The new increase brings the total confirmed cases in the country to 55,395.

There are currently 92 confirmed cases that are still in hospitalization. Of these, most are stable or improving, and none is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Furthermore, 4,756 cases are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for COVID-19.

Altogether 27 people have passed away in the country from complications due to COVID-19 infection.
