A poll jointly released on Wednesday by Reuters and Ipsos, a market research firm, shows that about 30 percent of surveyed Americans who lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic believe that they may have trouble paying for food or housing due to the expiration of enhanced federal unemployment insurance benefits last month.
As part of the 2.2-trillion-U.S.-dollar coronavirus relief bill passed in late March, Congress agreed to provide 600 U.S. dollars in federal unemployment benefits per person per week on top of state unemployment benefits.
However, those extra benefits formally expired on July 31 as Republican and Democratic lawmakers are deadlocked over negotiations on the next COVID-19 relief bill.
The poll also shows that around half of Americans said they are under some stress, but will be able to meet their basic needs.
The poll was conducted online on Monday and Tuesday throughout the United States and gathered responses from 1,215 U.S. adults.
