Storyline

Leaders of Cuba and France on Tuesday denounced U.S. moves to practice double standards and undermine multilateral cooperation during the general debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, where South African president spoke out for the Black Lives Matter movement.

In a video address to the session, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel condemned Washington's intensified economic blockade against the island nation.

Diaz-Canel also criticized the U.S. administration's use of double standards in the fight against terrorism and the issues of human rights.

"We denounce the double standards of the U.S. government in the fight against terror. The Donald Trump administration is also manipulating, with subversive aims, cooperation in the sphere of democracy and human rights, while in its own territory there is an abundance of practically uncontrolled expressions of hatred, racism, police brutality and irregularities in the election system and as to the voting rights of citizens," said Diaz-Canel.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called for further efforts to eradicate racism at the general debate.

"The year 2020 will be remembered for the massive groundswell to push back the frontiers of racism under the umbrella BlackLivesMatter movement. As a country that has known too well the anguish of institutionalized racism, South Africa supports the demands for swift action against racism," Ramaphosa said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in his video remarks that the current crisis of globalization can't be solved through turning to nationalism, and advocated the building of a new era of globalization that is fairer, balanced and sustainable.

The French president championed multilateralism, noting that the reconstruction of the foundations of the international order requires the establishment of functional international cooperation based on clear rules, defined and respected by all.

"The United States and its leader withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal brought negative influence to relevant mechanisms, and we will not compromise on that, as the U.S. move damaged the authority of the UN Security Council and its decisions and caused deterioration of regional situation," said Macron.
