I'm happy to see pupils in Primary Five and Six as I haven't seen them for a long time. Because of the epidemic, pupils can go home at midday after having half-day classes. Storyline

Primary and secondary schools and kindergartens in Hong Kong resumed in-person learning on Wednesday after months of suspension, with the COVID-19 epidemic largely under control.

Classes of secondary one, five and six and primary one, five and six as well as kindergarten three have resumed on a half-day basis for the time being.

This is to avoid students having to take off their face masks over lunch so as to minimize infection risks, according to the education bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

According to Chim Hon-ming, principal of the Chiu Sheung School, for safety concerns, anti-epidemic measures have been put in place.

Each pupil should have his or her temperature checked by infrared body thermometers before entering the campus. Any student whose temperature is above the normal level will be banned from entering and the school will advise him or her back home, Chim said.

Furthermore, disinfection is conducted every four hours in the whole school compound.

The semester usually starts on Sept. 1; however, the outbreak of epidemic had forced students to stay at home and take months of online classes.

Chim said he is pleased to see his students to get back and he wishes everything will return to normal with the epidemic subsiding.

"I'm so happy on the first day of class resumption and I've seen most of the students are here. When I had small talks with them, they said they were excited because they wanted to come to school. I'm happy to see pupils in Primary Five and Six as I haven't seen them for a long time. Because of the epidemic, pupils can go home at midday after having half-day classes. Not all activities can go on right now. I hope everything will return to normal as the epidemic is easing," he said.

The remaining face-to-face classes will resume on Sept. 29, education authorities said.

Hong Kong is gradually returning to normal as the epidemic breaking out in early July eased greatly, with the number of daily new local infections remaining at a low level.

Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection reported three new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, including two local infections, bringing the tally to 5,049. With most patients healed and discharged, there are currently 167 patients still hospitalized.
