Storyline

The agricultural supply-side structural reform launched in China have reaped benefits, as the country gained another good harvest this year, especially rice, corn and soy bean.

Green development is the main thrust of China's supply-side structural reform in agriculture. This year, China launched pilot projects in 300 counties that produce grain, cotton and oil, aiming to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers and increase efficiency. Meanwhile, 100 demonstrative counties of green pest control were designated to serve the same purpose.

In Huoqiu County of east China's Anhui Province, farmers are busy harvesting the 2000-mu rice in an herbicide-free fashion.

"The farm takes the model featuring a combination of rice planting with crayfish farming. The weeds in the rice field were all eaten up by the crayfishes. Although there are still some weeds left on the ridges, it doesn't harm the rice output," said Li Chuanchao, a local farmer.

Crayfish has been replacing the role of the traditional fertilizer as well as manual weeding in rice fields. Optimum planting methods lead to high-quality crops, which triples yields.

In Hezheng County of northwest China's Gansu Province, corn planting has undergone a big change. Instead of dividing the planting unit into household, the local authorities organized farmers to transfer their land and formed a village-based planting base.

The county introduced supersweet corn variety that is in short supply so as to create more profits.

"Through planting the supersweet corns, we have raised the per-mu output value and output," said Yang Heping, manager of the supersweet corn planting base in Hezheng County.
