Experts on human rights gathered together on Tuesday to discuss the unilateral coercive measures taken by the United States against some countries as a serious violation of human rights.
On the sidelines of the 45th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), the China Society for Human Rights Studies and some non-government organizations from Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia and other countries held a video conference discussing the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures against human rights amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Permanent representatives to the HRC from countries like Cuba, Belarus, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Iran, Syria and Zimbabwe, joined officials from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the discussion.
Many participants to the meeting agreed that the unilateral coercive measures implemented by the U.S. against countries like Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Syria and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have violated the UN Charter and the International Law, seriously violated the human rights of the people in those relevant countries, undermined the efforts taken by relevant countries in fighting against the epidemic, and damaged international solidarity and cooperation.
"Human rights are affected a lot by application of unilateral sanctions. And the example which we have just discussed is concern the U.S. announcement of renewal of the UN security sanctions against Iran is only one case, and as a result, these activities is not only illegal from the point of international law, it seeks to undermine, and it can undermine the authority of the UN Security Council," said Alena Douhan, the UN special rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures.
Noting that unilateral coercive measures will lead to more tragedies, Douhan called on relevant countries to take measures to ensure that the sanctioned countries can effectively protect their people from economic disaster.
The meeting participants also expressed that international solidarity is an important part of human right. Since the Second World War, the U.S. has always used unilateral coercive measures as a diplomatic method, which is the greatest violation of human solidarity and the greatest challenge to the cause of global human rights.
