Storyline

Brooklyn-based Japanese contemporary artist Tomokazu Matsuyama opened on Nov. 22 a solo exhibition "Accountable Nature" at the Long Gallery of east China's Shanghai.

The artist has put 24 oil paintings and four installations on display, of which 12 are his latest works.

The most attractive is his representative painting "Wanderlust Innocence". The piece shows a goose eating pizza, a stylish man watching an old TV show and a young woman dressed in an eclectic mix of different cultural elements.

"Nowadays, modern phone technology can bridge the gap between people. Yet it also blurs the differences of different cultures. So in this painting, you see the fusion of multi-cultural environments. I think it's fun, but also very challenging," said Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Another attraction is the installation "Nirvana Tropicana". Measuring seven meters tall, the piece is made entirely of stainless steel, showing a world of vitality after trials and tribulations.

"Anyone can see Shanghai is full of life and energy and that's the best representation of this installation. I also want to bring this kind of vitality to other places of the world during the pandemic," said said Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Matsuyama took to himself to plan the layout and arrangements of the exhibits.

The exhibition will end on Nov. 24.
