The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 13.3 million on Sunday, according to data released by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
The U.S. COVID-19 case count has risen to 13,363,182, with the national death toll from the highly contagious disease reaching 266,813 as of 18:27 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Sunday, the data showed.
The country now has the largest number of COVID-19 cases and death toll in the world.
In the past 24 hours, the U.S. saw an increase in new cases of 140,000. It was the 27th consecutive day registering over 100,000 new confirmed cases.
According to reports from the New York Times, November has had over four million COVID-19 cases as of Nov. 28, two times more than that of October. It sets a new record of monthly increase of COVID-19.
This year's Thanksgiving holiday as well as sales promotion events attracted customers to flood into shopping malls for discounts. In the past week, more than six million people traveled by flight.
Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said he worries that crowds at airports are going to get the country into "even more trouble" than it is in right now.
The number of hospitalized patients in 26 of the country's 50 states witnessed new record highs in the past week. On Nov. 28 alone, 91,635 infected patients were sent to hospital, the highest since the outbreak.
Fauci added that new COVID-19 infections contracted over the Thanksgiving holiday will not become evident until weeks later, making it "very difficult" as the virus could spiral out of control heading into the December holiday season.
As the Thanksgiving week drew to an end, more experts are warning the pandemic will likely get much worse in the coming weeks before a possible vaccine could offer some relief.
