Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday expressed support for Indonesia's plan to become a regional hub for vaccine production at a meeting in Jakarta with his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi.
Wang's visit came as Indonesia began its mass inoculation program with Indonesian President Joko Widodo receiving the first dose of Sinovac Biotech's CoronVac produced in China.
In a joint statement, Marsudi called on China to remove trade barriers on Indonesia's palm oil and other main export products to ensure more balanced trade between the two countries.
The day before, Wang met with Indonesia's Maritime and Investment Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan in the tourism destination of Lake Toba. The two ministers discussed investment in tourism infrastructure, the development of digital technology and marine safety.
