Storyline

China moved 630 million passengers during the first 32 days of the Spring Festival transportation campaign, said Chinese Minister of Transport Li Xiaopeng at a press briefing on Monday.

Li said that the passenger flow was at a low level this year, with the highest daily passenger flow taking place on February 28, reaching 31.52 million, 62 percent less than the number in 2019 but 149.8 percent more than the number in 2020.

China's railways, roads, waterways and civil aviation carried 630 million passengers, 54.1 percent less than in the same period of 2020.

The Spring Festival transportation campaign, also known as "Chun Yun" in Chinese, lasts for 40 days from Jan 28 to March 8. During this period, there is the largest population movement in the country as Chinese people usually return to their hometowns for celebrating China's Lunar New Year, the most important traditional festival of China.

The decline of the passenger flow this year was attributed to the call by the government to stay put during the festival in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
