Storyline

Thailand began its nationwide inoculation program on Sunday, with the CoronaVac vaccine developed by China's Sinovac.

The first shipment of the vaccine Thailand ordered from China's Sinovac Biotech arrived in the capital Bangkok last Wednesday.

Medical staff were among the first to receive the vaccine.

Thailand is using only Chinese vaccine.

The country will distribute the vaccine to 13 Thai provinces, nine with the most COVID-19 cases and four tourist regions. More vaccine will arrive.

The front-line medical workers and patients with chronic illness will be the first in the line, followed by those looking after quarantined arrivals in the country.

"Bangkok has the second-highest number of infected people, so we have to urgently control and prevent the virus," said Aswin Kwanmuang, governor of Bangkok.

Everyone who receives the vaccine will be monitored for 30 minutes to ensure they have no ill-effects.

"There's just a little pain when the needle goes in, after that it's fine," said Patcharaporn Boonlurluk, a nurse having received the vaccine.

However, the country warned people not to become too complacent after vaccination, saying that for the time being, face masks, hand washing and temperature checks are still necessary.
