Storyline


The Philippine Army held a ceremony on Tuesday to officially start the vaccination of armed forces soldiers with China's Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccination ceremony kicked off in Tagig's Fort Andres Bonifacio, the army headquarters. The batch of the Sinovac vaccine doses donated by China arrived in the Philippines on Sunday, the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccine doses to reach the Southeast Asian country.

Commanding General Philippine Army, Lt. Gen. Jose C Faustino Jr. and National Task Force Against COVID-19 (NTF) deputy chief implementer Vivencio Dizon attended the ceremony and gave speeches.

Lt. Gen. Jose C Faustino Jr., as the first one receiving the vaccine shot in the Philippine Army, expressed his thanks to China at the ceremony.

"It is inherent for the army to stay healthy. And most of our troops are in the front lines. And uh, we cannot be deployed to other areas if we ourselves are not protected. We have as front liners to be protected against these virus. Thank the government of China for this donation. I'm sure there is, no politics in here. It's a health crisis, and it is a priority right now," he said.

Vivencio Dizon said the vaccine would help the Philippines reopen the economy.

"The vaccine is critical to our opening up of the economy, as the president said, that Sunday and now that we have started it. And as we move along, I think we can now start planning for the reopening of the economy very soon," said Vivencio Dizon.

The spokesman of the Philippine Army said that 200 soldiers and officers of the Army got vaccinated on Tuesday. Later, the vaccination work will be carried out nationwide.

The Philippines started the vaccination on Monday with 756 medical workers receiving shots of the Sinovac vaccine. Also on Tuesday, Sinovac vaccine doses arrived in cities including Davao City and Cebu City.
