<headline xml:lang="en">Chinese firm employees contribute to environmental protection in Amazon rainforest</headline>
        <description role="CCTVPLUSdescrole:Storyline" xml:lang="en">
A Chinese underground gas exploration team has made remarkable contribution to recording and protecting wildlife in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, with the commitment to the vision of green development.

Led by the green Belt and Road Initiative, China is pursuing green development concepts and making efforts to safeguard ecological security across the world.

Sun Jun and his colleagues from the Bureau of Geophysical Prospecting under the China National Petroleum Corporation are searching for underground natural gas in an economic block in Maranhao State in northeastern Brazil. Their work includes surveying, drilling and collecting geophysical data.

The entire construction area is about 46,000 square kilometers, with tropical rain forests, shrubs, pastures and crops distributed on the surface. The company arranges for six teams to work simultaneously every day, and each of them is responsible for a 2,000-meter-long area. Sun jokingly calls their work a "computed tomography" for the earth.

High standards of environmental protection are required for this project. Sun said the working standards they set are higher than not only the industry standards, but also those required by their partners and Brazilian law.

When the exploration team open their paths in forests, they try to make them as narrow as possible to reduce damage to the natural environment.

If the planned exploration route crosses through communities, the team will bypass those areas. Despite the increased costs, the environmental impact is minimized.

The project's environmental protection team is also staffed by six botanists who are responsible for the protection of the animals and plants in the construction area.

So far, the project team has recorded 2,256 species of plants and 517 species of animals, including leopards and other rare animals and plants under the protection of the local government. The data is sent to the Brazilian environmental protection authorities for further research on the local ecology.

"The natural environment is very important to us. They [the project team] have daily meetings to explain to us the importance of protecting the environment," said Luis Pinto, an environmental monitor with the project.

During the exploration process, the staff will use colored streamers to mark the plants -- red streamers are for the tree species under protection and blue streamers indicate the route of the project.

The streamers are all made of biodegradable materials. When the exploration mission is completed, a special team will come to collect the waste and restore the rainforest.

At present, 70 percent of the mission has been completed, and it is expected to be fully finished in mid-July.

For more than a year, the project has been inspected by local environmental protection departments and received very high evaluations.

On their days off from exploration, Sun often takes his team members to local schools to discuss environmental protection issues with teachers and students.

"The efforts made by the Chinese company in environmental protection is crucial for this generation and for the next generation. It's my great honor to establish friendly relations with such an excellent company," said Luciani, a middle school teacher.

Sun, who has been working in Latin America for nearly 20 years, said he found local companies were somewhat distrustful of Chinese firms when he first arrived in Brazil. All these year, he stuck to the concept of "green exploration" and finally got locals to recognize Chinese companies.

"The message we want to send to the local people is that we want to work together with communities to achieve harmonious development, shared development and sustainable development," Sun said.

In addition to cooperation in work, Sun has also developed close personal relationships with his partners in Brazil. He hopes to further deepen understanding between the two peoples and boost people-to-people exchanges via his own efforts.
