"For example, I'm on duty on this side of the road, if a pedestrian runs the red light on the other side, he might have completed the violation process when I run over there to point out his illegal behavior. This new warning system can timely correct his illegal act by sending out the vocal warning alert, 'Red light, please return to wait'. Many young people often use their smartphones while crossing the road. Now when they look at the ground, they can see the luminous tiles, which can be a better reminder to them."

"The luminous tile is actually made of a special material. It is a kind of semitranslucent and wearproof concrete material, which has good resistance to pressure. And the friction coefficient on its surface is similar to that of asphalt, so it would not be slippery when the wheels roll on. Its light and sound will be adjusted automatically to adapt to changing time and environment. So it would not cause light and noise pollution to the residents nearby at night."

Storyline

The Shanghai police installed a new pedestrian crosswalk warning system in the Bund area of Shanghai before the National Day holidays, the first of its kind in China. The system also has the function of alerting traffic offenders, and will be used on the surrounding roads of the upcoming first China International Import Expo.

Compared with the traditional red and green indicators, the new system has a number of LED indicators being installed on the street and on the ground. When the traffic is permitted or forbidden, the corresponding green and red indicators will be switched on to give more obvious signs. At the same time, the system can also be used to alert people who run red lights.

In addition to voice and light alerts, the system is equipped with a high-pixel camera with the function of capturing and checking pedestrians who go against the traffic sign. The photos of those violators will be released in real time on the LED electronic screen as a deterrent.

Now when they look at the ground, they can see the luminous tiles, which can be a better reminder to them," said Huang Jun, a policeman from the Traffic Police Detachment of Huangpu Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Taking into consideration both safety and beauty, the new system adopts a number of high-tech materials. The pigment coating used on the LED lighting post can effectively solve the problem of eliminating advertisements that are illegally posted. And the LED luminous tile on the ground are made of specialized materials.

So it would not cause light and noise pollution to the residents nearby at night," said Gu Rongjie, a researcher of the Third Research Institute under the Ministry of Public Security.

In addition, the system also takes into account the sound and light pollution problems, having an adaptive adjustment device to automatically lower and turn off the prompt volume and light intensity late at night.

The system has been installed at a dozen major intersections in Shanghai. Most of them are on roads around the upcoming first China International Import Expo, which will be fully operational by then.
