Storyline


A Chinese sculpture art exhibition was held in Havana, Cuba, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city.

Displayed at the exibition were the "fat ladies" series of sculpture by China's renowned sculpture artist, Xu Hongfei.

The eight pieces of the works included "Floating Heavenly Music", "Flying Flower", which mimic a classic posture of Marilyn Monroe, and one of Xu's most famous works, "Kiss".

Xu said, "My works are down-to-earth, reflecting daily life of ordinary people. The exhibition is not held in an art gallery but in places where there are most people so that they can come close to my works."

"These unique works mean a lot. For us, they is a gift filled with happiness. They are important representations of the cultural bridge between China and us," said Luis Carlos Góngora Domínguez, vice president of the Havana Provincial Administrative Council.

Havana is the 36th stop of Xu's world tour sculpture exhibition. It will last till January 17, 2020.

Xu was born in south China's Guangdong Province in 1963. He graduated from the department of sculpture of Guangzhou Art College in 1990. As the current director of the Guangzhou Sculpture Institute, he has created a series of well-known sculpture works represented by the "fat lady" series, which are well received by viewers around the globe for its hilarious style and choice of subjects.

On March, 2013, Xu's representative works were displayed for the first time at the China National Art Gallery. Later, Xu's works were shown in a dozen countries.

On June 2013, his works were shown in the square before the Sydney Opera House. The confident, humorous images attracted the attention of the public. Prime Minister Kevin Michael Rudd at the time spoke highly of the sculptures.

In September, 2013, Xu showed his works in Toscana of Italy. It was an art tour that earned him the credit of "modern Marco Polo" from local media.

On January 9, 2014, the "fat lady" series were shown at the museum of louvre, attracting a number of visitors including the former prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and the president of French Artists Assocciation at the time.
