Storyline

China's Wuhan has emerged robustly one year on from the COVID-19 pandemic shock with significant recovery from the virus-induced deepest recession by achieving milestone socio-economic accomplishments, ushering in a full return to the pre-crisis prosperity.

At 0:00 on April 8 last year, Wuhan lifted outbound travel restrictions, opening 75 passages for traffic. One year later, vehicles running on the highways are no longer transporting epidemic prevention materials, but fresh vegetables and expressing goods. The number of vehicles coming to Wuhan City from other cities has also increased significantly.

On the early morning of Thursday, Gongjialing toll station is seeing a busy scene, as vehicles kept coming and going.

"During the lockdown period of Wuhan, the traffic in and out of the city from our side was around 100 vehicles. The current average daily traffic volume has reached 40,000 vehicles, which is basically the same as the volume in 2019," said head of Gongjialing toll station.

Just this year, Wuhan Tianhe Airport opened 13 new domestic air routes from Wuhan to Jining, Weifang, Dunhuang and Jiayuguan, with an occupancy rate of 90 percent.

"It is convenient for us from Tangshan City to travel to the Three Gorges and Enshi Grand Canyon in Hubei. We took this flight back and forth. It's really convenient," said a visitor surnamed Pei.

Wuhan has also established five "air express routes" to key cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu this year. In terms of air cargo, Wuhan Tianhe Airport has 12 regular international cargo routes covering the four continents of Europe, America, Asia and Africa in the first quarter of this year.

A few days ago, the No. X8202 train, which carried more than 600 tons of electronic products and anti-epidemic materials produced in Hubei, departed from Wuhan and headed for Marasevic in Poland.

This is the fourth China-Europe train departed from the station in April, and the 40th China-Europe train departs in 2021, surpassing the number of trains in the same period in 2019.

"The LCL volume has more than doubled compared with the same period last year. The categories have expanded from machinery parts and raw materials to epidemic prevention materials, fiber optic cables, clothing, etc., ranging from high-end goods to people's livelihoods. There are more types of goods packed in containers. The source of goods has transferred from the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, to Wuhan and the surrounding areas of Hubei Province, which accounted for 70 to 80 percent," said Wang Tuo, site leader of LCL warehouse of Wuhan Han'ou International Logistics Co., Ltd.

At present, China-Europe freight service has 25 stable cross-border transportation routes, radiating 34 countries and 76 cities in Eurasia.

A full year has passed, and the familiar streets and flavors of Wuhan have returned.

In the city's Liangdao Street, long queues were seen in front of a breakfast shop at nine o'clock in the morning.

"We've been waited in line. Look, we don't even have a place to sit and eat. Though we all eat without a seat, we still feel that the food is very tasty. We feel that the whole Wuhan has recovered and returned to normal life. It's really good," said a visitor from east China's Fujian Province.

Hubei has recovered to over 95 percent year-on-year in the whole year from the plummet of the region's GDP in the first quarter in 2020, with the imports and exports in the province bucked the trend and increased by 8.8 percent.

All the 58,000 remaining poor people were lifted out of poverty.

By the end of 2020, the number of Fortune 500 companies that have settled in Wuhan has reached 300.
