Storyline

Jake Pinnick, from Kewanee of Illinois of the United States, has emerged as a martial art master on Wudang Mountains in Shiyan City, central China's Hubei Province, as he has been obsessed with Chinese Kung Fu (martial arts) since his childhood.

Pinnick highly enjoyed famed martial arts films starring actors including Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung when he was a child. But there is no Chinese Kung Fu studio in his hometown, and some in other cities are not authentic, he said.

He came across a video about the Eight-Immortals Stick by Yuan Shimao, the 15th generation of Wudang Kung Fu. At that time, he decided to worship him as his teacher for authentic Chinese martial arts, he said.

In 2010, Pinnick finally took a long-distance journey to the Wudang Mountains.

"I've been here for more than 11 years. I learn martial art in Wudang Mountains because I am very much interested in Chinese culture, and Wudang Kung Fu (martial arts). I practice martial arts here every day. I feel very healthy and comfortable here," he said.

In the Wudang Taoism Kung Fu Academy, he learned the traditional martial arts such as use of the Eight Immortals Stick, Shadowboxing and Qigong (a millennia-old system of coordinated body-posture and movement, breathing, and meditation used for the purposes of health, spirituality, and martial-arts training). He completed his course in 2014, but he chose to stay there for love.

In 2014, he went back to the United States along with his pregnant wife, Cao Lingling. Four years later, the couple returned to the Wudang Mountains with their daughter Cao Linna.

"The martial arts, beautiful scenery and nice people here make me feel like this is my hometown. I often go out for fun with my friends in my spare time. I also spent the last Spring Festival here," he said.

During the epidemic, Pinnick said, the people in Hubei offered him a lot of help.

"I don't feel like I'm a foreigner here in Wudang Mountains. The people here are very nice to me. This is my good friend, police officer Pan. During the epidemic, he helped me a lot and brought me a lot of masks and food," he said.

Now, Pinnick works as a martial art coach as well as an administrator of the foreign language website of the martial art academy.

He said that he wants to open a martial arts school in the U.S., and let more people fall in love with Wudang Kung Fu.

"I am very grateful to the people here, and they are very nice to me. A lot of foreign friends of mine in Wudang have been vaccinated. I feel safe here, and I'm healthy. My family is also here. I'm married to a Chinese lady, and my daughter is also here. We love Hubei, and we love Wudang. This is our second home," said Jake.
