Storyline

Chinese automakers have equipped their new energy vehicles (NEVs) with a range of new features including those that can help prevent drivers from dozing off at the wheel.

During the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show, Chinese car manufacturers have unveiled several new energy vehicles like the i-Free from Voyah, the high-end NEV arm of Chinese carmaker Dongfeng Motor Group.

It offers not only standard features but also massage equipment, and a driver fatigue detection system - which monitors drivers’ vigilance in real time to keep them awake and attentive.

The deputy general manager of Dongfeng Motor Group says the vehicles use fragrance, wind, music and audio recordings to keep drivers awake.

"If you got tired, (the vehicle will) immediately activate its aroma diffusers to remind you (that you are driving). Besides, (it will) tune temperature to 18 degrees as fast as possible, and (its fans will) blow towards your face to wake you up. And meanwhile, it will find and play some exciting songs online to remind you. And also, it speaks to remind you," You Zheng, deputy general manager of Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

Another Chinese NEV producer, Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group, is showcasing nine Hengchi-branded electric car models at the auto show.

The group's CEO said the company will begin trial production of the cars in the fourth quarter of this year, with an aim to deliver them on a large scale basis next year.

He added that the vehicles are programed with tourism, healthcare, and sport services software from its parent company, Chinese conglomerate Evergrande Group.

"(We) have created an Evergrande eco-sytem, linking our travel platform, healthcare services, and even Evergrande sports together. All of them are brought together. Digital technology allows your vision of connecting cars to home to come true," said Liu Yongzhuo, president of Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group.

The Auto Shanghai 2021, or the 19th International Automobile Industry Exhibition, kicked off in Shanghai on Monday and will last till April 28.
