Storyline

International experts in multiple fields have highly commented on Chinese President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference on Tuesday, saying that the speech has provided fresh guideline and driving force for the global fight against COVID-19 and for strengthening of global governance, and will play a role in pushing Asia and the rest of the world to keep advancing toward the community of a shared future for mankind.

Xi attended the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2021 via video link on Tuesday and delivered the keynote speech. In the speech, Xi said that the Belt and Road are a public pathway open to all, not a private path owned by one single party; that China will expand cooperation with various parties in infectious disease control, public health, traditional medicine and other areas; that China will work with all sides to promote "hard connectivity" of infrastructure and "soft connectivity" of rules and standards in an effort to build a closer partnership for connectivity: that efforts should be made to strengthen cooperation on green infrastructure, green energy and green finance; and that China will work with all willing participants to build the Belt and Road into a pathway to poverty alleviation and growth.

In separate interviews with China Global Television Network via video link, the international experts expressed the views on the keynote speech given by Xi.

"My deepest impression is that President Xi reiterates a shared future for mankind, co-development and co-reaching, and green economy. This is especially the case when COVID-19 is still not under control. So we need to put aside different opinions on less urgent issues so that we can fight COVID-19 and when this is clear then our economy will co-develop," said Yip Sau Leung, an associate professor of economics with Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.

Two experts in Nepal said President Xi's statement on the Belt and Road Initiative has reassured Asian countries and those interested in participating in it with equal opportunities.

Dinesh Khanal, a China expert in Nepal, said that Xi's speech has cheered the whole Asia up.

"President Xi's mention of the goal to pursue common development and vitality of Asia is commendable and praiseworthy. Following China's success and progress, Nepal and other Asian countries will march towards prosperity and development along the sunny path of the Belt and Road Initiative," said Khanal.

Robert Holzmann, governor of Austria's central bank, has been invited to participate in this year’s forum via video link.

Holzmann said the BFA has received wide recognition in the international community after two decades of development.

"The Austrian National Bank has realized China's rapid economic development many years ago and attempted to enter the local financial market. Therefore, the Austrian National Bank, in as early as 2008, sealed a cooperation deal with People's Bank of China (PBoC), and became the first central bank outside of Asia to invest in Chinese yuan assets," said Holzmann.

In Africa, an official of Ethiopia's ruling party said China's development approach, which is based upon mutual respect and benefits, has gained wide recognition among its partner states.

"The principle of mutual respect for sovereignty, mutual respect for common development, and mutual respect for common interests are, I think, the guiding principles, which help you to have a very good image outside in terms of foreign policy principles. So even the economic models, the investment models and the foreign trade models that you apply are based on the mutual benefits that states can benefit together, citizens can benefit together. that I think has given you a very huge recognition from other countries, where, for instance, you have very safe and harmonious relationship with other states," said Bikila Hurisa, head of public and international relations of Ethiopia's Prosperity Party.

Established in 2001, the Boao Forum has evolved into one of the most prominent economic forums in Asia, which is dubbed by many as the "Asian Davos." As the world economy is facing numerous pressing challenges, this year's forum aims to provide the Asian solutions to how economic entities can ward off a potential global economic slowdown.
