Storyline

An international student from Brazil shared his experience of getting the coronavirus vaccine in central Chinese city Wuhan, which once was hit hard by COVID-19.

Luiz Filipe Botelho Esmeraldo, an international student at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has been in the city for two years. In his video, Luiz said after getting the first dose of Chinese vaccines that the vaccination was safe.

"I believe the vaccine will be very good for us, because it will make us in a safety way," Luiz said.

Many overseas students, like Luiz, believed that they could be in a safer situation after being vaccinated.

"I come from Pakistan. I feel very safe [here]," another student said.

"I feel safer. This was the first dose that we need to take. [There are] a total of two doses. Twenty-eight days after [we got the first dose], we are going to come back here to take the second dose, but we will be fine," Luiz said.

Luiz recalled the period when the coronavirus broke out in the city, saying that the epidemic in Wuhan was brought under control in a short time.

"I heard all the news. It was happening in Wuhan. I believe everything happened so fast. But everything, like all the problems, has been solved very fast," Luiz said.

China locked down Wuhan on January 23rd last year after an increasing number of COVID-19 cases was being reported. The country later sent thousands of medical staff to help cope with the pandemic in Wuhan and other cities in Hubei. It also built many field hospitals, including Huoshenshan and Leishenshan, each of which had 1500-plus beds and was dedicated to treat serious cases.

Such measures proved effective. Wuhan was lifted out of lockdown 76 days later on April 8, 2020.

The city has seen tremendous changes since then.

Luiz said he plans to continue studying at the university and start a career in the city.

"So about my plans, also, it is to continue my studies here, in universities, or maybe try to find a job," said Luiz, adding that he thinks for international students, there are more opportunities in the city, as Wuhan right now is a big city, getting bigger and bigger, and getting developed.

"You need more people with different type of skills. For two years, I've been here, in Wuhan, in Hubei. I like this place every day even more. This place is amazing. I can say I'm in Hubei, and I love Hubei," added Luiz.
