"Currently, China has reached its growth target of forest reserve by 2020 as was promised to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The carbon storage of forest vegetation now reaches 9.186 billion tons in China. According to the results of two surveys, the annual increase in carbon storage is more than 200 million tons, which is equivalent to about 700-800 million tons of fixed carbon dioxide."

"China has demonstrated a rather positive trend of forest increase. China holds the biggest forest gains over the last [three] decades, with a net annual increase of close to 2 million hectares a year. With this, China has become the biggest contributor to combat forest loss across the world. All these numbers speak for themselves on how critical and significant China's forest development and achievements are for the rest of the world. This makes it a very valuable resource for the world to combat climate change."

The world marks the Earth Day on Wednesday, reminding people of the many challenges facing humanity such as climate change, desertification and pollution.
Pursuing green, low-carbon and innovation-driven development, China has been contributing a great deal to protecting the planet with its comprehensive efforts in afforestation, desertification control, among others.
The latest global forest resource assessment by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations shows that the world registered an annual forest net loss of about 4.7 million hectares during 2010 to 2020, while Asia had an annual increase of 1,17 million hectare, most of which were in China.
In the past five years, China planted more than 36 million hectares' trees and finished a forest tending area of more than 42 million hectares. Meanwhile, the ecological condition of grasslands also improved gradually, with the comprehensive vegetation coverage of natural grasslands reaching 56.1 percent, and the ability to cope with climate change continuing to improve.
In the past five years, more than 200,000 hectares of wetland were increased in China, and the area of desertificated land continued to decrease.
At present, China has a forest area of 220 million hectares, of which 80 million are planted.
"Currently, China has reached its growth target of forest reserve by 2020 as was promised to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The carbon storage of forest vegetation now reaches 9.186 billion tons in China. According to the results of two surveys, the annual increase in carbon storage is more than 200 million tons, which is equivalent to about 700-800 million tons of fixed carbon dioxide," said Zhang Guobin, a researcher at the ecological conservation and restoration department under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
According to the FAO, the global forest biomass carbon storage increased by about one billion tons from 2010 to 2020, and most of the increase came from China.
