Storyline


The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 32.92 million as of Saturday, with the death toll exceeding 585,000, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The country's case count rose to 32,922,963, with the death toll reaching 585,702 across the country as of 19:20 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Saturday according to the CSSE tally. The CSSE also recorded that a total of 270,341,312 doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in the U.S.

The United States has the largest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday announced that the vaccinated Americans can mostly stop wearing masks indoors, given that 35.8 percent of the American population is fully vaccinated.

A host of states have already moved to ease their mask mandates in accordance with the CDC's new guidelines, including Illinois, Kentucky, Washington, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Minnesota; businesses like Home Depot, Kroger and Starbucks announced they would keep their policies requiring employees and customers to wear masks for now.

As of Saturday, 18 states in the U.S. and some big-label businesses have announced plans to drop public mask mandates either immediately or in the weeks to come, but other states such as California, New York and New Jersey are moving forward with caution.
