Storyline


The Chinese mainland has reported several new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases over the past few days, with five new infections reported in east China's Anhui Province, and seven in northeastern Liaoning Province, bringing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to over 90,840.

Facing a fresh COVID-19 outbreak, east China's Anhui Province on Saturday reported no new confirmed, suspected or asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, the provincial health commission said Sunday.

From Thursday to Saturday, the province reported a total of five confirmed cases, consisting of two in the provincial capital of Hefei and three in the city of Lu'an.

Another seven asymptomatic cases, all in Lu'an, were reported during the period and are receiving under medical observation.

Since Friday morning, residents in Hefei have queued up at vaccination sites to receive COVID-19 vaccines. Some sites have prolonged their service time or even run around the clock.

So far, over 100,000 people have been tested in Hefei, all returning a negative results and more than 1,000 people who have come in close or secondary close contact are being quarantined.

As of Saturday, a total of 2.6466 million doses of vaccine have had been administrated in Hefei and 364,100 vaccine doses were administrated alone on Friday, the highest single-day vaccination record, according to the local health commission.

Liaoning reported seven confirmed COVID-19 cases between 00:00 on Thursday and 12:00 on Sunday, with two reported in the provincial capital Shenyang and five others in the city of Yingkou, according to the provincial health commission.

As of Saturday, nine residential communities and villages in Yingkou had been upgraded to medium-risk areas for COVID-19.

In Shenyang, measures are being taken to stop the coronavirus spread, including contact tracing and ramping up of testing.

In the country's capital Beijing, the local disease prevention and control center has traced nearly 30 close contacts of the reported cases in Anhui, including a driver of a ride-hailing platform who tested negative.

Experts said that in light of the new cases, it is crucial for everyone to stay alert and get vaccinated.
