Representatives from Palestine and Israel on Sunday blamed each other for the escalating conflict at a United Nations Security Council open debate on the situation in the Middle East via video link.
At the UN Security Council open debate on "The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question," Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said that Israel has committed "war crimes and crimes against humanity," while Israel's Permanent Representative to the UN Gilad Erdan said that "Hamas carries out attacks while hiding behind Palestinian civilians."
Each time Israel hears a foreign leader speak of its right to defend itself, it is emboldened to continue murdering families in their sleep, said al-Malki.
He said Palestinian freedom is the only path to peace, and it is the Security Council's legal and moral duty to help achieve it.
Israel's Permanent Representative to the UN Erdan said that "it is far from the first time that Hamas has fired rockets at Israeli civilians, all while hiding behind Palestinian civilians."
He warned the Security Council against choosing to avoid condemning Hamas, which he said would destroy opportunities of dialogue for peace.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the meeting that current hostilities in Gaza and Israel are "utterly appalling," adding that "Fighting must stop. It must stop immediately."
The UN chief said the United Nations was "actively engaging" all sides towards an immediate ceasefire.
The UN Security Council open debate was chaired by Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China, Council President for the month of May.
