Storyline


Ancient venues for religious activities are well protected in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Jiami Mosque, located in Yecheng, a county of the Kashgar Prefecture, is more than 500 years old. It was renovated and opened to service.

"The Jiami Mosque has been in use for a long time. The gatehouse and gate tower were evaluated as in dangerous condition in 2018. In order to protect the believers during their religious activities, we renovated it. For the time being, the renovated mosque is well preserved and has been put into use for daily religious activities," said Abdukeram Mamut, imam of the Jiami Mosque, Yecheng County

It is very common to protect the ancient venues for religious activities in Xinjiang.

The 800-year-old Id Kah Mosque is a religious site in Yutian, a county of Hotan Prefecture. As early as 2013, it was already designated as a major cultural heritage site under the protection of the state.
In 1988, Emin Minaret in Turpan was included into a key cultural heritage site under the protection of the state.

In 1990, Jiaman Mosque in Shache County was included into a key cultural heritage site under the protection of the autonomous region.

In 1999, Shaanxi Mosque in Yining was included into a key cultural heritage site under the protection of the autonomous region.

So far, a host of local venues for religious activities with historical value are included in the cultural relics protection list at all levels, and religious cultural heritages are effectively passed on and protected.
