Storyline

A good example is the best sermon. For Chinese President Xi Jinping, words and deeds from his father Xi Zhongxun are a great family heirloom that runs deep in Xi's outlook on life, work and philosophy of state governance, inspiring him to solemnly honor his duties towards the nation and the people.

Over the years, Xi Zhongxun taught his son three important lessons in terms of life, work and governance through his words and deeds: maintain close ties with the people; attach importance to investigation and research; and practice thrift and hard work.

Xi Zhongxun (1913-2002) was a leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the state. Like his father, Xi Jinping was also a staunch supporter of the Party's values and beliefs that CPC officials and members are required to prioritize the interests of the people and persist in representing them and working on their behalf.

Xi Zhongxun said, "Leaders, officials and the masses are equal and there is neither lowliness nor nobleness among them. They should live among the masses forever." He practiced as what he said by always staying with the people and talking with them no matter where he paid a visit or worked.

Xi inherited his father's style in this regard. "Any Party member or official only has the responsibility and obligation to serve the people and has no right to abuse his power," he said.

When living in Liangjiahe Village, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, starting from 1969, just one among tens of millions of urban educated youths who went to live and work in the countryside, Xi Jinping ran literacy classes to teach villagers to read; During his tenure as Party chief of the county of Zhengding in north China's Hebei Province in the 1980s, he worked for farmers to reduce and exempt their annual agricultural tax; When working as secretary of the CPC Fuzhou Municipal Committee in the early 1990s, Xi vigorously promoted the approach of "knocking on the door of local residents to learn their worries and helping them find solutions"; When he became the Party and state leader, he introduced himself as "a servant of the people."

In his whole life, Xi Jinping has vividly interpreted what is maintaining close ties with the people.

When China began its reform and opening-up in 1978, Xi Zhongxun served as Party chief of the southern province of Guangdong.

To get started in Guangdong, Xi Zhongxun, then 65, worked around-the-clock. During one summer, he visited 21 counties in the scorching heat to familiarize himself with the local situation.

Xi Jinping, then a student in Tsinghua University, went to the province with his father to take part in social practice activities. He was influenced by his father's down-to-earth working approach.

Inheriting his father's down-to-earth approach, Xi Jinping visited all the villages in Zhengding during his tenure of county Party chief. When taking office as acting governor of east China's Zhejiang Province in 2002, he worked for more than 12 hours a day, and spent over 40 percent of his working time on carrying out grassroots investigation and research.

On Nov 3, 2020, the full text of the proposal for formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 was published. This document with far-reaching historical significance was completed under the leadership of Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. To this end, he successively went to Jilin, Anhui, Hunan, Guangdong and other places for investigation, and presided over seven symposiums. He said "without investigation, there will be no right to speak, let alone decision-making."

What else Xi Jinping learned from his father is thrift and hard work.

Xi Jinping once recalled his childhood life and said his worn-out clothes were patched up instead of being thrown away and he and his younger brother used to wear clothes and shoes handed down from their elder sisters.

The Xi family has a tradition of being strict with children and living a simple life. Xi Jinping carried on his family's tradition. He has reiterated the importance of "being diligent and thrifty" and has stressed the idea that "honor to frugality and shame to extravagance" should be promoted.

"There is no TV or other furniture in his living room except some old sofas," recalled Wang Youhui, who once worked with Xi in Zhengding and visited Xi's home in 1983. He said that taught him what is thrift.

While making inspection tours, Xi chose to rest and spend the night in the special train for several times to downgrade the receptions and reduce the spending burden for local authorities. As for overseas trips, he has stressed on avoiding waste. He said the living place should not be luxurious, and cleanness and comfort is enough.

Xi is practicing thrift himself and said the spirit of hard work should be upheld although the living conditions have greatly improved nowadays. He called on all the Chinese people to pass on the Party's hereditary treasure of staying frugal and abstaining from extravagance.

This year’s Father's Day falls on June 20, a day to honor fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society.
