Leading U.S. epidemiologist Dennis Carroll has affirmed the trustworthiness of a study indicating that COVID-19 may have appeared in the United State earlier than the documented infection.
A recent research study done by the National Institutes of Health shows that the infection began in the United States at a low level as early as December 2019.
The study is based on the 24,000 blood samples collected at the beginning of 2020.
"This is consistent also with reports that we've been seen from Europe and even other reports from the U.S. that suggest an earlier circulation of this virus prior to the initial identified one at the end of January," said Dennis Carroll, chair of the Global Virome Project Leadership Board, and former director of the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID's) Pandemic Influenza and other Emerging Threats Unit.
Dr. Carroll stressed that as the research over the origins of COVID-19 has come under global spotlight, some people are using it as a tool to try to reap political gains.
"The fact that it has become an opinion piece that it's now been swept up into politics. It's no longer sort of a public health question. In the absence of evidence, we have opinions, and the opinions, unfortunately, are driven more by politics than by good intentions," he said.
The epidemiologist also pointed out that the pandemic can only be tamed by concerted efforts from countries around the world.
"I would hope that the United States could join with China and other countries to really put forward a global strategy that we all work together on to make these vaccines available to everyone," he said.
