Storyline

The Museum of the History of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was inaugurated Friday in Beijing, with an exhibition marking the upcoming centenary of the founding of the CPC on July 1.

Situated near the capital city's Olympic Green, the museum covers an area of 147,000 square meters with 10 floors, making it the largest, most comprehensive and most important national exhibition hall in China.

The museum has the colonnade structure, which shows the traditional essence of Chinese architecture, square and dignified, simple yet grand. As a museum for the Party history, it is endowed with original and meaningful designs.

"We adopted Chinese white marble column in the design of the entire building, where there are 14 columns on each side; that is, a total of 28 white marble columns. It signifies the course of 28 years of fierce struggle of our Party from its birth to the founding of the People's Republic of China," said Bai Yimin, vice curator and deputy secretary of the CPC Committee of the museum.

Outside the exhibition hall, four major sculptures are eye-catching, with themes of "Faith," "Great Cause," "Meeting Challenges," and "Dream Chasing," showing the arduous struggle, heroic spirit and the invincible confidence of the CPC in uniting and leading the Chinese people to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Among these sculptures, "Faith" shows the images of 71 communists taking an oath in different historical periods.

"Every communist with different occupation and background has experienced such a solemn time to take the oath. So this action [of taking oath] has been going on for a century," said Fan Di'an, who is in charge of the sculpture and also president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Along with the inauguration of the museum, the exhibition themed "Staying true to the founding mission" at the museum has for the first time demonstrated the glorious history of the CPC over 100 years in an all-round, complete and panoramic manner with more than 2,600 photos and pictures, and 3,500 exhibits.

To highlight the theme of the exhibition, the organizer has chosen more than 420 exhibits that are under top-class state protection, including an exhibit of gallows which was the first relic collected by the department of cultural relics of the People's Republic of China back in the 1950s and was coded as 0001. It was the very gallows used by a warlord that time to kill Li Dazhao, a co-founder of the CPC.

"The gallows has truly demonstrated the fearless spirit of our communists in their revolutionary fightings," said Li Zongyuan, another vice curator of the museum.

In addition to the gallows, the exhibits also include two handwritten manuscripts from Karl Marx: one is a piece of note on political economy during his 1845 sojourn in Brussels; the other one is a set of six letters he sent to the publisher on the publication of the French version of the "Das Kapital", both under top-class state protection.

"[Through these manuscripts], we are actually having a historical talk with Marx. This enables us to see how hard Marx was working to establish the Marxist theory, and how we, as a Marxist political party, beef up our efforts in Party-building and achieve the sinicization of Marxism. These are closely related," said Li.

In addition to historical relics, the museum also displays something new, such as the sample of lunar soil which was brought back by the return capsule of China's Chang'e-5 lunar mission on Dec 17 last year.

Construction of the museum started on Sept 10, 2018 and was completed on May 5, 2020. Nearly 50,000 people were directly involved in the project. It will open to the public after July 1.
