The world's first gigawatt hydropower unit officially entered the commissioning stage of grid connection on Monday at Baihetan, the world's second largest hydropower station in terms of installed capacity in southwest China.
The generator circuit breaker of the No. 14 generating unit was switched on at 8:58 on Monday and successfully connected to the grid, which marks the homestretch for the power generation.
After the No.14 generating unit connecting to the grid, a series of pilot projects will be carried out. The units will be transferred to the 72-hour trial operation stage at proper time when the pilot projects are finished.
Baihetan Hydropower Station straddles the southwest provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. With a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, it is the second largest hydropower station now in the world in terms of installed capacity, second only to the Three Gorges Dam project in Hubei Province of central China.
The first batch of Baihetan's generating units are scheduled to go into operation by July 1, 2021, and all units are expected to be operational by July 2022.
