"Due to the epidemic, the Tokyo Olympic Games have changed a lot and there are plenty of regrettable things. Sometimes we have found that there are a lot of matters beyond our capacity, but we have to accept all the things and do the best job that we can. If the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics can be successfully held without cluster infections or the coronavirus spreading to the Japanese public, and there would not be any problem of athletes when they return home, we can then experience the joy of success."

We believe such actions will be inspirational. So many kinds of difficulties and setbacks can be overcome with endless efforts because of the Olympic dream. This time, not only Japan, but also the whole world is facing the severe test of the pandemic. Storyline

Athletes can bring confidence, inspiration to all people around the world to help them overcome difficulties amid the COVID-19 pandemic, said president of the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC).

Yasuhiro Yamashita, a 64-year-old former judoka, has achieved a 203-game winning streak in his career and never lost against a player from outside Japan. Now, as the president of JOC, Yamashita said he is most concerned about the pandemic situation during the Tokyo Olympics, adding that the real success of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games means the COVID-19 should not to spread during or after the event.

"Due to the epidemic, the Tokyo Olympic Games have changed a lot and there are plenty of regrettable things. Sometimes we have found that there are a lot of matters beyond our capacity, but we have to accept all the things and do the best job that we can. If the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics can be successfully held without cluster infections or the coronavirus spreading to the Japanese public, and there would not be any problem of athletes when they return home, we can then experience the joy of success," said Yamashita.

Japan had set a target of winning 30 gold medals at this year's Olympic Games, which is not easy to realize as the country recorded its highest gold medal tally of 16 at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and later equaled the mark at the 2004 Athens.

Considering the epidemic, Olympic committees of some countries and regions have proposed watering down the winning number of gold medals.

"We're not insisting on winning 30 gold medals. We want athletes to focus more on doing their best under limited circumstances. We hope they can show the spirit of hard work while compete for the medals. We believe such actions will be inspirational. So many kinds of difficulties and setbacks can be overcome with endless efforts because of the Olympic dream. This time, not only Japan, but also the whole world is facing the severe test of the pandemic. I hope athletes from all over the world can inspire those who are going through hardships and give them confidence to overcome the difficulties. Not only athletes from Japan, I think players around the world can show the way for people of all countries," Yamashita said.
