Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed ecological conservation while visiting the city of Nyingchi during an inspection tour to southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region from Wednesday to Friday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, arrived at the Nyingchi Mainling Airport on Wednesday and was warmly welcomed by local people and officials of various ethnic groups.

He then visited the Nyang River Bridge, to inspect the ecological preservation in the basin of the Yarlung Zangbo River and its tributary Nyang River.

Emphasizing the importance of integrated protection and systematic management of environmental elements including mountains, water, forests, and farmlands, he called for enhanced ecological conservation and restoration of major rivers and basins, so as to coordinate the development, utilization and protection of water resources and safeguard various living creatures.

"The Yarlung Zangbo River system forms a precious green area like a 'green lung'. However, its ecosystem is vulnerable. So we must protect it while trying to use it, with protection as the priority," Xi said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Xi visited a local city planning hall, where he learned about the city's construction process and development planning. He urged further efforts to guide and inspire the ideology of human-nature harmonious coexistence and sustainable development.

Xi visited the Tibet Autonomous Region from Wednesday to Friday for the 70th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation.

Xi extended congratulations to the 70th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation, visited officials and ordinary people of various ethnic groups and conveyed the CPC Central Committee's care to them.

Xi said over the past 70 years Tibet has made historic strides in the social system and realized full economic and social development, with people's living standards significantly improved.

It has been proven that without the CPC, there would have been neither new China nor new Tibet, Xi said, noting that the CPC Central Committee's guidelines and policies concerning Tibet work are completely correct.

Xi stressed efforts to strengthen developing border areas, emphasized the four major issues of stability, development, ecology and border-area consolidation, and called for new achievements in protecting the ecology of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and advancing its sustainable development.
