Storyline

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States has surpassed 34.32 million as of Friday, with the death toll hitting 610,431, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Specifically, the country's case count rose to 34,325,902 as of 19:21 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Friday, the CSSE tally showed.

As of Friday, the North American country had administered a total of 339,342,134 vaccine doses, said the CSSE.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in all 50 U.S. states and Washington D.C. is rising rapidly as the Delta variant spreads quickly in the country and vaccination slows down, U.S. media reported on Friday .

According to Johns Hopkins University, the United States has averaged 43,700 new COVID-19 cases per day over the past week, a 65 percent increase and nearly triple the number two weeks ago.

At the same time, COVID-19 vaccination rates have been falling - vaccination rates, which peaked in April with more than 3 million doses administered per day, have fallen sharply in the past three months to around 530,000 doses per day, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Florida and Nevada reported the highest number of new daily cases over the past week, more than double the national average. Those states also had lower vaccination rates than the national average, with only 47.7 percent of Louisiana's population over the age of 12 receiving at least one dose of vaccine, well below the average of 65.9 percent in the country.

Hospitalization rate and daily deaths for COVID-19 patients in the United States have also been on the rise, with the hospitalization rate up 32 percent from the previous week, according to the CDC.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy says 97 percent of COVID-19 hospitalizations and 99.5 percent of deaths occur in unvaccinated people.
