Efforts must be reinforced to prevent the transmission of the Delta variant of coronavirus as it has become the most dominant strain across much of Europe, top health authorities in Europe warned on Friday.

The SARS-COV-2 Delta variant is moving fast across Europe based on surveillance data collected between June 28 and July 11, the WHO Regional Office in Europe and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in a joint statement.

On Friday, the European Commission said its panel of experts on the Delta variant held its first meeting.

European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakidou stressed at the meeting that the spread of the Delta variant in the EU is intensifying. The COVID-19 outbreak is still going on. So are the efforts to contain it. It is not the time to lower the guard against it, she said.

She said the panel's work will help to better identify and understand the variant and predict the emergence of new ones, which will offer guide for developing ways to deal with them.

In the week ending on July 17, one in every 75 people in England contracted the novel coronavirus, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said Friday. In addition, one in 80 people in Scotland were infected, one in 170 in Northern Ireland and one in 210 in Wales.

Spanish people will receive a third dose of Pfizer or Modena vaccine, Spain's Minister of Health Carolina Darias said on Friday, as the country has seen a surge in confirmed cases and a record number of new cases in several places in a single day.

Germany on Friday categorized all of Spain as a high-risk area for COVID-19, requiring passengers entering Germany from Spain to be quarantined upon arrival, except those who have completed vaccination.

Malaysian Health Minister Adham Baba said at a news conference on Friday that sread of the Delta strain is speeding up in the country.

A total of 392 cases infected with the novel coronavirus variants have been detected in the country as of Thursday, including 173 ones with the Delta variant, he said.
