The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Latin America and the Caribbean surpassed 40 million by the end of Friday local time, with nearly half recorded in Brazil.
Specifically, the total case load in the regions reached 40.16 million, with the death toll hitting 1,354,012.
Brazil reported 108,732 new cases over the 24 hours ending on Friday, raising the total caseload to 19,632,443, the Health Ministry said.
With more than 63,000 cases added due to under-reporting from the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, the figure marks the second-highest number of new daily cases since the onset of the outbreak.
According to the Ministry of Health, over the same 24 hours, 1,324 more people died of COVID-19 in Brazil, pushing the death toll to 548,340.
Chile reported 1,656 new infections in the previous 24 hours, with the total case load reaching 1,606,358, Health Minister Enrique Paris said on Friday.
The official added that 83 more deaths were also recorded, bringing the total to 34,875.
The number of cases has since early June dropped constantly as nearly 79 percent of the targeted residents across the country have received at least one dose of vaccine.
By the end of Friday, Chile had administered more than 24.52 million doses of vaccines.
Argentina reported 15,622 new cases and 286 more deaths over the 24 hours ending on Friday, raising the total case load to 4,827,973 and death toll to 103,359.
The country has administered over 29.36 million doses of vaccines, and nearly six million people have received two doses.
