"In the past when I was doing research on the protection of the ancient city of Lhasa, I even didn't know how to step forward as there were muddy puddles everywhere. But today, you can see that no matter where you go, the streets and alleys are all unblocked, with brilliant lights. People can go anywhere they want to go. A precondition for the transformation is the historic and cultural protection of this block. Cultural heritage should be continued. The first principle in the transformation is not to change the infrastructure greatly, but to repair the cultural relics well in the process of constructing the infrastructure. The transformation should be based on a good construction of the infrastructure."

Storyline

Ancient Barkhor Street, an iconic scenic spot in Lhasa City of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region with Jokhang Temple at its center, has been well protected over the seven decades since the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951, as the central government has attached great importance to the protection of the historical and cultural heritage of the Barkhor ancient city.

Nine years ago, the Barkhor ancient city management committee of Lhasa was officially established on July 23, 2012, responsible for the protection and management of the ancient city.

In the past nine years, four protection projects have been executed successively to effectively protect and improve the ancient city's infrastructure, residential environment, ancient city features, and historical and cultural blocks.

The first principle in the transformation is not to change the infrastructure greatly, but to repair the cultural relics well in the process of constructing the infrastructure. The transformation should be based on a good construction of the infrastructure," said Thubten Khedrup, director, Center for Economic and Cultural Studies of Tibet University.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, President Xi Jinping has attached great importance to the protection of cultural heritage, made many field visits and given important instructions on the protection of cultural heritage.

On July 16, Xi sent a congratulatory letter to the 44th Session of the World Heritage Conference held in Fuzhou City of east China's Fujian Province. In the letter, Xi pointed out that the world's cultural and natural heritage is an important achievement of the development of human civilization and natural evolution, and an important carrier of promoting exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations.

"On July 23, 2012, the ancient city management committee was established, and the Lhasa Ancient City Protection Regulations was promulgated and put into effect. Now, when walking along the Barkhor Street, people can find not only ancient and traditional ethnic handicraft shops, but also fashionable brand chain stores and unique cultural and creative studios.

Great changes have taken place in the ancient city over the past 70 years, bringing heartfelt smiles and happiness to local residents.
