Storyline


Chinese weightlifter Hou Zhihui set Olympic records to win the women's 49kg title at Tokyo 2020 on Saturday.

Hou lifted an Olympic record 116kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 210kg, also a new Olympic record.

This is the first gold medal in weightlifting and the second for the Chinese delegation at the Tokyo Olympics.

With an Olympic-record lift of 94kg in the snatch, the 24-year-old Hou kept her own rhythm, calling 109kg, 114kg and 116kg respectively in her three attempts in the clean and jerk and easily making it for the title.

At the Rio Olympics five years ago, Hou, then aged 19, lost the chance to go on stage due to injury at the last minute. During the past five years, Hou overcame countless difficulties and finally realized her dream of winning a Olympic gold medal.

After winning the gold medal, Hou said her good mental status helped greatly in the competition.

"I feel that this time, it is different from the past. I used to worry too much about getting injured or something else. But this time, I was completed devoted so that there would be no regret. This time it was a cool lift, without distracting thoughts," she said.

Hou also expressed her gratitude to the government, and also to her family, for their powerful support.

"I am grateful to the people of the whole country for their support, and also to the government, for offering us a safe and strong backing when the pandemic is so severe. I am also very grateful to my family for their trust in me. I doubted myself before, but this time I proved I am worthy of your trust," Hou said.

In Hou Zhihui's hometown of Guiyang County in central China's Hunan Province, her relatives, friends, former coaches, and some fellow athletes watched the live broadcast of the game. Every time Hou successfully lifted the barbell, everyone would wave the national flag in their hands and cheer for her.

"First of all, congratulations to Hou Zhihui for winning the Olympic champion. I am very excited now, Hou Zhihui, I am so proud of you," said Li Zhiping, former coach of Hou.
