Storyline

The National Committee for Rally and Development (CNRD), led by the military junta in Guinea, hosted consultations with representatives from all walks of life on Tuesday.

The four-day consultations are held at the Palace of the People in Conakry, with attendees of Guinea's political parties, civil society organizations, religious leaders, diplomatic representations and mining operators.

Guinean military officer Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who formed the CNRD, and representatives of hundreds of the country's political parties attended the closed-door consultations on Tuesday. In his speech, Doumbouya said the consultations will establish the framework for a future government of ethnic unity, according to the representatives. Doumbouya also called on the participants not to repeat the past mistakes in establishing a transitional government.

"Guineans are tired. Guineans want quick results. I do not ask them to solve all the problems, but at least I hope they can value and rely on competences for the government from now on," said Fode Mohamed Soumah, former vice president of National Assembly.

"What is needed is to have an inclusive transition, a transition which would allow the establishment of a credible state institution, which could lead to free and transparent elections in order to build a democratic, free country, and in which the entire population can enjoy economic development," said Diao Balde, president of Union for the New Guinea (UGN).

Heavy gunfire was heard on Sept 5 in the urban commune of Kaloum, downtown Conakry, in Guinea, where the Presidential Palace and several ministerial departments are located.
