Storyline

Syria's government has deployed troops in a volatile rebel-held neighborhood in the southern city of Daraa after complex negotiations to end fighting.

A decade of conflict has ended in al-Balad, one of the main neighborhoods in Daraa, which saw the first protests in March 2011.

According to state media, 1,200 rebels are participating in the deal, ending years of intense fighting in the area.

However, the rubble reflects the complexity of the situation.

"There has been a good turnout of the insurgents who want to settle their status. We are with the people and working for them," said a Syrian police official.

A cautious move by the residents of al-Balad area of Daraa, many of whom don't want to speak on camera, except a 76-year-old man.

"Since the agreement was reached three days ago, we are relieved. Thank god, my sons and I never left our homes," said the resident.

According to the agreement, the Syrian army is setting up a number of checkpoints in and around Daraa al-Balad to enforce security.

"We are the first checkpoint at al-Masri square. There are nine checkpoints. Thank god, residents are gradually returning, whilst schools are open and services are beginning to resume. We are working on de-activating explosives," said a Syrian army soldier.
