Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping always respects the seniors and sets a good example for the whole society with practical deeds.

Thursday marks China's Double Ninth Festival, also known as Chongyang Festival, an occasion when Chinese pay respect to senior people.

The festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth Chinese lunar month, which is Oct. 14 this year.

President Xi's mother once recalled that as a son, Xi was absent at a family gathering celebrating his father's 88th birthday due to busy work when he served as the governor of Fujian Province. He then wrote a letter in which he expressed his regret for the absence and respect for his father.

Despite heavy work, whenever Xi was free, he would take a walk with his mother, holding her hand while chatting with her. When he was unable to accompany his parents on festive occasions, he would call them to send his regards.

On the bookshelf in Xi's office, there are two photos recording the moments of him accompanying his parents.

President Xi's love and respect are not only limited to his own parents, but to all seniors.

During his work in Zhengding County of Hebei Province, Xi published an article in 1984 to call on all young officials to respect senior officials, so as to cultivate a sincere, harmonious and cooperative relationship between younger and older generations in advancing the Party's cause.

When serving as the secretary of Communist Party of China (CPC) Zhengding County Committee, Xi always rode a bicycle to visit rural areas for public errands, as he allocated the only car owned by the local CPC committee to senior officials.

He also made decision to remodel a meeting room into a recreational center for senior officials. As senior officials were often faced with healthy problems, Xi ratified a series of measures, such as giving senior officials priority in medical treatment, opening wards for senior officials, and timely reimbursement of medical expenses for them.

When serving as the secretary of CPC Fuzhou Committee, Xi deeply impressed the local officials with his respect for the old people. Some officials recalled that Xi used to order deliveries of key necessities to senior officials to improve their living standard, and he also looked out for them whenever the weather turned bad.

In 2013, Gong Quanzhen, wife of war hero Gan Zuchang who retired as a farmer and spent 29 years in promoting rural development, was over 90 when she met President Xi when she was nominated as a role model for ethical deeds.

Xi was deeply touched to see Gong at such an age and shared Gan's story with others. He highly commended Gong's spirit of fulfilling her utmost value to serve the people.

Xi has always remained mindful and considerate of seniors' physical fitness and at an art and literature symposium back in 2014, he sought to put all the senior attendees at ease by suggesting that they could take a break from the activity if they felt tired.

When Xi met with ethical role models and pioneers at an award ceremony in 2017, he shook hands with two seniors standing in the front row. Before Xi had group photos taken with them, he invited the two elderly attendees to sit next to him and asked staff to bring two extra chairs to accommodate them.

Xi's kind gesture won a round of applause from the attendees, with the touching moment captured on camera and aired on television before the footage went viral on China's social networks.

As China is seeing a move towards an aging society, it is our common aspiration to ensure the elderly are well cared for, and living happily, healthily and long, Xi once said.

To him, taking good care of seniors is always a top priority. By respecting and caring for the seniors, Xi stayed true to his original aspiration and set the good example for all Chinese.
