Storyline

Afghanistan has been distributing humanitarian aid provided countries including China, Turkey, and Qatar, but still faces humanitarian crisis nationwide with dire need of more food and jobs, according to the country's charities.

Afghanistan is facing a severe financial crisis with unemployment pushing more people into poverty, and international aid agencies are warning of an "impending humanitarian crisis." Some countries have provided humanitarian aid and the Afghan Red Crescent Society has been distributing it across the country.

"We've distributed aid among the internally-displaced people in Kabul, including 1,000 families from Panjshir valley, who moved to the city because of the war. Some districts in Logar and Paktia provinces have also received supplies," said Maulawi Matiul Haq Khalis, director general of the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society.

"The Islamic Emirate, UN and the Red Crescent have given us some food items," said Azizullah, an aid beneficiary living in Charkh District of Logar Province.

Many countries promised to provide financial support to Afghanistan at the United Nations Assembly last month, but the UN said it has only received a small amount of the promised funds.

"Thirty-three tons of food have been received from Turkey. We also got food items from the Kuwait Red Crescent. Qatar has sent 1,600 cartons of dates and the Iranian Red Crescent has provided us with 28 tons of food," said Maulawi Matiul Haq Khalis.

Unemployment has had a huge impact on the life of Afghans. Many government employees have not returned to work and daily wage workers have not been able to find jobs.

"I ask the Afghan Red Crescent Society to continue helping us. Hopefully, the government will also pay our salary, and then our problems will be solved," said Abdul Rahman, a teacher who relocated from Panjshir and has received aid.

"We have not received any aid. I have been jobless for the last two months. I have only been able to work for five days," said Jahangir, a daily wage worker.

Several surveys indicate that more than 95 percent of Afghans will live under the poverty line by mid-2022. Representatives from the United Nations, Red Cross, and some non-governmental organizations have travelled to Afghanistan to try to avert the humanitarian crisis.

The Taliban continues to ask the international community for further humanitarian aid and financial support.
