Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of implementing the national strategy to address population aging, which will ensure senior citizens enjoy happy lives in their twilight years.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made an instruction on the country's work concerning its aging population, ahead of the Double Ninth Festival, China's Seniors' Day, which this year falls on Thursday.

For this Seniors' Day, Xi extended greetings to all senior citizens in the country, wishing them happy and healthy lives.

Xi urged Party committees and governments at all levels to attach great importance to the work related to the aging population, noting that comprehensive measures should be taken to ensure that the elderly live their lives healthily with their rights and interests safeguarded.

Throughout his political career, the Chinese president has always championed the cause of elderly care. Moments demonstrating his care and respect for the elderly are quite popular.

During the tough battle against COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, Xi personally commanded and deployed the disease prevention and control work, urging to always give top priority to people's life and health.

In Hubei, the hardest-hit province of China, more than 3,000 COVID-19 patients over 80 years old and seven aged more than 100 years were cured, with the oldest aged 108.

During an award ceremony honoring role models with outstanding performances in China's fight against poverty on Feb 25, when the 98-year-old Xia Sen tried to get out of her wheelchair and stand up to receive the certificate, Xi patted her shoulder to beckon her to sit down and bended down to present her the certificate.

Similar scenario also happened on Sept 29, 2019 when Sun Jiadong and Zhang Fuqing, who sat in wheelchairs for having difficulties in moving, received the Medal of the Republic from Xi.

In November 2017, Xi met with more than 600 representatives attending an award ceremony for ethical role models.

As he prepared to pose for a group photo, Xi noticed two elderly representatives - Huang Xuhua, 93, and Huang Dafa, 82, standing among others. Xi went to hold their hands and told them: "Don't stand over there. Come to sit next to me."

While the two tried to decline the offer, Xi insisted. "Please do come. We can always make space for you," he said. The moment was captured by camera.

Xi said giving seats to the senior role models is in the traditional virtue of respecting the elderly. And he practiced what he said.

Days before the New Year's Day of 2014, Xi visited a nursing home in Beijing, talking with senior citizens and asking about their physical conditions, families and life at the nursing home.

Xi was delighted to hear that they were not only well-fed and well-clothed, but also had plenty of activities. Before leaving, Xi wished them happiness.

During an inspection tour of Chengde City in north China's Hebei Province, Xi visited a community service center for elderly home-care on Aug 24, 2021.

He said that ensuring happy lives for the elderly is a vital responsibility of Party committees and governments at all levels, calling for efforts to develop all-inclusive elderly care services and improve the networks for community-based services centers providing home care for the elderly.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, Xi has given a series of instructions and adopted relevant plans and arrangements to develop the country's elderly-care services and the pension system.

During his domestic inspections, Xi would regularly visit elderly care facilities to check if support policies have been well implemented and the residents are given proper care.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), the Healthy China strategy was implemented steadily.

In 2019, the average life expectancy, a key gauge of a country's economic and social development, particularly in terms of its medical and health services, reached 77.3 years in China, up 0.96 years from 2015.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), China will further improve the infrastructure that helps support elderly care services and improve their quality. According to the plan, the country's basic old-age insurance coverage will reach 95 percent by 2025, up from 91 percent in 2020.
