"In the short term, since the COVID-19 epidemic in China was mostly kept in check this time last year, automobile demand has surged and the basic indexes have seen a marked increase year on year. Recently, as sporadic outbreaks have taken place in multiple places, and the chip supply shortage has not been fundamentally alleviated, the production, supply and consumer demand of automobiles have seen a slowdown. In the middle and long term, China's automobile market has gradually entered a period of stable development after years of rapid growth."

Storyline

China's auto market maintained stable and sound growth momentum in the first three quarters, with all major indicators exceeding the pre-pandemic level, said China's Ministry of Commerce on Thursday.

The sales volume of China's used cars totaled over 12.96 million in the January-September period, up 35.3 percent year on year, according to Shu Jueting, spokeswoman of China's Ministry of Commerce.

In September, the ratio of used car to new car transactions hit 0.76. China recycled 2,106,000 junk vehicles in the first nine months, up 35.9 percent year on year, said Shu Jueting.

In terms of new car sales, the sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) surged and registered robust performance. In the January-September period, NEV sales amounted to about 2.16 million units, up 190 percent year on year, accounting for 11.6 percent of new car sales, with September sales setting a new monthly record, according to the ministry.

After years of rapid growth, China's automobile market has gradually entered a period of stable development, according to Shu.

In the middle and long term, China's automobile market has gradually entered a period of stable development after years of rapid growth," said Shu.

Multi-faceted measures will be taken to further boost the used car market, according to Shu.

"First, we will deepen the reforms to delegate power, streamline administration and optimize government services in the sector of automobile circulation, and accelerate the introduction of relevant measures, to further stimulate the vitality and endogenous driving forces of the automobile market. Second, we will further remove unreasonable restrictions on used car trading, further facilitate long-distance trading of used cars, promote the standardization, branding and scale development of the second-hand car industry, and create a booming market. Third, we will improve the relevant systems for the management of automobile circulation, and speed up the revision of the measures for the management of second-hand automobile circulation and the provisions on mandatory scrapping of motor vehicles, with a view to further optimizing the environment of automobile consumption," said Shu.
