"In terms of composition, the China-developed bobsleigh is made of a carbon fiber composite material, with high strength performance called T800. Compared with similar products abroad, its strength has been more than doubled; and its drag coefficient has been reduced by more than 5 percent. It is a new breakthrough for China's two-person bobsleigh."

Storyline

Beijing unveiled state-of-the-art ice and snow sports equipment designed for Chinese athletes at an exhibition on Thursday, showcasing China's achievements in scientific and technological innovation during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020).

The first China-developed bobsleigh made of carbon fiber composite material attracted many visitors at the exhibition, as it is lighter and designed in a streamlined way to fit the body shape of Chinese athletes.

After several iterations, several components of the China-developed bobsleigh have been optimized to make its drag coefficient lower than imported ones.

"In terms of composition, the China-developed bobsleigh is made of a carbon fiber composite material, with high strength performance called T800. Compared with similar products abroad, its strength has been more than doubled; and its drag coefficient has been reduced by more than 5 percent. It is a new breakthrough for China's two-person bobsleigh," said Zhou Yu, a senior engineer from the Aerospace Research Institute of Materials and Processing Technology.

To ensure the safety and comfort of athletes during the competition, personalized helmets made of carbon fiber were also designed.

The exhibition also showcases some high-performance racing suits tailored for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The newly designed uniforms are expected to reduce the resistance of athletes by 10 percent through the optimization of fabric and vortex induced structure, thereby helping Chinese athletes achieve better results in the competition.
