"In accordance with the Basic Law and the relevant provisions of the HKSAR, it is reasonable, legal and unquestionable for the HKSAR government to strip the relevant personnel of their qualification as district councilors. Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong. Hong Kong affairs are purely part of China's internal affairs. No foreign country has the right to point the finger at Hong Kong affairs and China's other internal affairs."

4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Wenbin, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"After Hong Kong's return to China [in 1997], the Hong Kong people have been entitled to unprecedented democratic rights and broad freedoms. Ironically, the United States and the UK have scrambled to play the role of a 'savior'. Behind their hypocritical concern about the rights and freedom of the Hong Kong people lies their true intention to disrupt the rule of law in Hong Kong, undermine Hong Kong's stability, and stir up chaos in Hong Kong."

6. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Wenbin, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"Facts speak louder. With the implementation of the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (popularly known as the Hong Kong national security law) and the principle of 'patriots governing Hong Kong', the chaotic situation of social violence in Hong Kong has been completely reversed. The legitimate rights and freedoms of the Hong Kong people have been better protected, and Hong Kong's unique advantages and development potential have been fully demonstrated. China urges the relevant countries and institutions to earnestly respect China's sovereignty and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's other internal affairs."

Storyline

China urges the United States and the United Kingdom to stop pointing the finger at and interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's other internal affairs, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin on Friday.

The Chinese move came after the U.S. Department of State and British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss expressed concerns about the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's (HKSAR) disqualifying some of the district councilors on Thursday.

No foreign country has the right to point the finger at Hong Kong affairs and China's other internal affairs," Wang said at a press conference in Beijing.

Wang pointed out that in fact, neither the United States nor the United Kingdom ever really cared about the democracy and freedom in Hong Kong in history. In a century and a half of British colonial rule, all 28 Hong Kong governors were appointed by the UK and Hong Kong had no elections, no democracy, and the people of Hong Kong had never enjoyed real freedom.

"After Hong Kong's return to China [in 1997], the Hong Kong people have been entitled to unprecedented democratic rights and broad freedoms. Ironically, the United States and the UK have scrambled to play the role of a 'savior'. Behind their hypocritical concern about the rights and freedom of the Hong Kong people lies their true intention to disrupt the rule of law in Hong Kong, undermine Hong Kong's stability, and stir up chaos in Hong Kong," Wang said.

"Facts speak louder.
