Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping has underscored intensified ecological conservation in the Yellow River basin while urging priority to improve the wellbeing of the relocated people during his visit to Dongying City of east China's Shandong Province on Wednesday and Thursday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, on Wednesday visited a dock at the estuary, an ecological monitoring center and a national-level nature reserve of the Yellow River Delta.

He checked the river's waterways, the ecological environment of the wetlands in the river delta, and learned about the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin.

Noting China has made remarkable progress in green development since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, Xi called for accelerating the building of a national park at the Yellow River estuary, and entrenching the concept of ecological civilization in the process of striving for achieving the second centenary goal of fully building a great modern socialist country by 2049.

On Thursday morning, Xi visited the Agricultural High-tech Industrial Demonstration Area of the Yellow River Delta to check on the comprehensive use of saline-alkali soil and the development of modern agriculture in the Yellow River Delta.

At the demonstration zone, Xi highlighted the strategic importance of developing salt-resistant crops, which he said can increase the productivity of soil and help ensure food security in China.

Noting the strategic significance of ecological preservation and agricultural development in the Yellow River Delta, Xi called for efforts to conduct relevant researches and make breakthroughs in turning sci-tech achievements into productive forces.

When visiting a residential community of relocated residents on Thursday, Xi spoke highly of the extraordinary feats of relocating residents from the flood plain of the Yellow River.

The Dongying-section of the Yellow River had a narrow watercourse prone to floods. The central and local governments carried out the widening project at the downstream of the Yellow River in the 1970s, and hundreds of thousands of residents have been relocated to higher grounds close to the levee of the river to make space for the project.

Since 2013, Dongying City has built and renovated a batch of modern rural communities to improve the people's living conditions.

At the Yangmiao Community in Dongying's Kenli District, Xi checked the living conditions of the villagers who were relocated to make space for widening the Yellow River.

Xi said he is very pleased to learn that the relocated residents are living and working in contentment, and making progress in rural vitalization.

"I have been very much concerned about the situation of flood plains of the Yellow River since the 18th CPC National Congress. The massive relocation-and-reconstruction program is an extraordinary feat. What's the CPC for? To serve the people. We need to know what we must do and what we must do quickly. The Yellow River management is one of the issues. I am very pleased to learn that you are living and working in contentment, and making progress in rural revitalization. Hereby, I wish you a happy family, success in your career and good health, and your children will grow up healthily and happily," he said.
