Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday called for closer cooperation between Asian and European countries to uphold multilateralism and jointly safeguard world peace and stability while attending the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit via video link in Beijing.
Li said that since the Asia-Europe Meeting was founded 25 years ago, political mutual trust among all parties has been enhanced and exchanges and cooperation have been deepened.
Due to the far-reaching impact of the ongoing pandemic, the world economy is recovering with twists and turns, the premier said, noting that it is of practical significance that the summit has adopted the theme of "strengthening multilateralism for common growth".
Li said upholding multilateralism is the right choice to safeguard world peace and stability.
All countries should uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, take a broader global perspective, and shoulder longer-term and conscious international responsibilities to jointly safeguard world peace and stability, he said.
In the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic, Li said, cooperation on vaccine and drug research and development should be strengthened to promote international public health cooperation.
For the post-pandemic recovery, he said it is necessary to pursue coordination between economic growth, green transformation and low-carbon development.
He also called for accelerated building of "fast tracks" and "green channels" to maintain the stability and unimpeded flow of global industrial and supply chains.
The premier pointed out that exchanges and mutual learning are an important way to promote mutual understanding between the people of Asia and Europe.
He called for strengthened exchanges in education, culture and sports to enhance mutual understanding.
China will continue to support the Asia-Europe Foundation, Li said, adding that it is also ready to hold an Asia-Europe Young Leaders Camp and invite all parties to participate in the camp.
In the face of difficulties and challenges, Li said, Asian and European countries will surly create new prospects for Asia-Europe cooperation as long as they uphold the spirit of mutual respect and win-win cooperation and work together to build a strong engine for common development and prosperity.
Attendees at the summit agreed that against the backdrop of the pandemic, all parties should deepen the Asia-Europe partnership, jointly respond to international and regional challenges, safeguard world peace, and promote common development.
They said joint efforts are needed to combat the pandemic, strengthen multilateralism, and ensure the security and stability of the global industrial and supply chains.
They also called for efforts to expand cooperation in such areas as innovation, digital economy and connectivity to promote world economic recovery and growth and bring more benefits to the people of all countries.
