Storyline

The China-Laos Railway is scheduled to operate in early December, and passengers from both countries will be able to enjoy the convenience of bilingual services and the design of new stations, which blended traditional local architecture with elements of modernity.

Of the 50 new stations along the new route, including 18 in southwest China's Yunnan province, the first batch of 25 stations will open to the public soon.

Walking into the brand-new station in Yunnan's border town of Mohan, signs and advertisement boards in Chinese and Laotian could be spotted everywhere. Staff at the service center dressed up in traditional outfit will provide bilingual greetings and services.

The design of each station reflects inspiration from local culture. The tea leaves-inspired ceiling of the departure hall at the Pu’er Station reminds people of the city's legendary dark tea, while the roof of the Xishuangbanna Station mimics a peacock, the iconic bird of the region, spreading its feathers.

Across the border in Laos, the rail station in capital city Vientiane is the largest of its kind in the country with a capacity of 2,500 people. The ceiling was inspired by the artisanal Chinese knot and Dok Champa flower, the national flower of Laos, which embody the friendship between the two countries.

Meanwhile, the exquisite design of the Luang Prabang station echoes with the city's history and fame for its numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries.

"Each station on the China-Laos Railway is a unique scene, which incorporated local culture and regional traditions. The display boards on the platforms and at the waiting halls are showing information in Chinese and Laotian. And our railway staff can conduct simple communication in Chinese and Laotian, providing convenience to passengers," said Ma Youliang, a construction deputy commander at the China Railway Kunming Group.
