"Generally speaking, its transmission power will be higher, but its incidence will not necessarily be high for two reasons. On the one hand, humans fight the virus with vaccines or antibodies and the virus needs to adapt to such attacks on them. On the other hand, the virus itself has to find an environment most suitable for survival in the human body. For these two reasons, it is not likely that the virus strain will be resistant to drugs after we use them."

"When Omicron appeared, it spread extremely fast. Like I said, it spread extremely fast, but in general, most patients show relatively mild symptoms. Of course, just because symptoms are mild does not mean we can just leave it there, unless like I said, the virus meets two conditions, the decline of the fatality rate and the transmission power."

9. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zhong Nanshan, academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering:
"I don't think we need to overstate its influence. Probably it has more mutation sites, more than 40, to be specific. Omicron has 35 on its whole genome segment and 15 in its binding domain. But the IHU coronavirus mutant recorded in Paris has 46 mutation sites. Of course, theoretically, its ability to evade the human immune system and vaccines and its resistance to antibodies may be stronger."

Storyline

The influence of the new coronavirus variant IHU should not be overstated, even though the mutant strain has more mutations than Omicron, said top Chinese public health expert Zhong Nanshan on Thursday.

Mutant strains like IHU might be more infectious but because of antibodies and vaccinations, they will not necessarily lead to a higher incidence of infections, said Zhang, who also serves as an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

For these two reasons, it is not likely that the virus strain will be resistant to drugs after we use them," Zhong told reporters.

"Now the IHU virus variant has appeared. It is too early to say whether it can become a virus as widely dominant as Delta, because the virus needs to adapt itself in these two respects," he said.

"When Omicron appeared, it spread extremely fast. Like I said, it spread extremely fast, but in general, most patients show relatively mild symptoms.
