Storyline

The upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics presents an important opportunity for the world to unite amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with the media expected to play a key role in promoting the Olympic spirit and enhancing the development of winter sports, international media experts said following Wednesday's China Media Group (CMG) Forum.

Held in Beijing, the first CMG forum discussed the application of high technology in the Winter Olympics and saw senior representatives from 145 international organizations and mainstream media outlets from 78 countries and regions around the world taking part.

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the forum, expressing hope that the forum participants would pool their wisdom through discussion and contribute to showcasing the unique charm of ice and snow sports, carry forward the Olympic spirit and promote the development of winter sports.

Dick Pound, former vice president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), expressed his hope that the Games can cultivate positive exchanges.

"I think that what President Xi said is right that the Olympic Games can promote the kind of peaceful exchanges that we all wish could happen. So let's get together and figure out how to make it work," said Pound.

Paolo Panerai, editor-in-chief and CEO of the Italian media group Class Editori, said that the media should play its part in enhancing the friendship among athletes from different countries.

"The media should uphold an objective and impartial stance and vigorously promote sportsmanship and friendship among athletes. The spirit of fair competition shown during the Games will bring people closer. It is a model that the world should follow today," said Panerai.

Ashraf Siddqui, chief editor of Asian Telegraph Qatar, stressed the importance of the world working together, and also spoke highly of President Xi's efforts in developing the sports industry.

"[The message] I take from President Xi is teamwork, bringing everybody together. The same way, what I've seen today, President Xi's involvement, President Xi's interest at every step and in the sports that shows how the leader of a country is concerned about the health of the people and bringing all the people within the country and all the world [together]," said Siddqui.

During the forum, CMG President Shen Haixiong said that cutting-edge broadcasting technologies will be adopted in the coverage of the grand sports event.

According to Shen, a 5G Ultra HD mobile live-broadcast studio on the high-speed railway line linking the co-host cities of Beijing and Zhangjiakou was set up, which is the first of its kind in the world.

In addition, revolutionary 8K technology will be used in the broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, short track speed skating and figure skating events, while 4K technology will be used across the production and broadcasting of the entire Games, according to Shen.

These innovations have caught the eye of many other senior figures around the world.

"What interests me most is the technological innovation and creative thinking that the CMG has adopted in its coverage of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics," said Oleg Dobrodeyev, general director of All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company.

"What impressed me most is the ultra-high definition livestreaming studio on high-speed train and 8K live broadcast for the Beijing Winter Olympics. This is the beginning of a new era of sports event broadcasting. I wish the Chinese people and all the sports fans a wonderful time watching the Games, and a happy Lunar New Year. We will share the passion of the Winter Olympics with you from far away in France," said Arnaud de Courcelles, general director of BFM Business.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will take place between February 4 and 20, followed by the Winter Paralympics from March 4 to 13.
